Select Aquatics

    Select Aquatics breeds affordable,
    quality, specialty tropical fish for
    hobbyists and conservation
    research. Most are not often
    seen and many are endangered
or extinct in the wild. This site
is also a one stop place for
    fishkeeping information on
    how best to keep these
    fish.

If you are keeping an aquarium,
you have the opportunity to help
preserve species that are about to
go extinct in the wild. As well, due
    to increased export restrictions,
many species are at risk of
    disappearing from the hobby.
The fish offered here are hardy,
    generally not difficult to care
    for, and may depend on
    hobbyists such as yourself to
    maintain their availability.

        Select Aquatics of Erie, CO.

        Select Aquatics maintains a
        fairly consistent collection
        of species/lines that are
         bred here and posted as
available. If you wish to buy
anything on this page, or wish
to see a new species offered,
        please contact Greg Sage at
        selectaquatics@gmail.com .

since many of these fish are rare
    or hard to obtain.

From your first email to inquire
    about ordering until the moment

I continue to ship hard goods on the day following
payment, and the information below applies only to
     the shipping of live fish

I have been shipping USPS Overnight Express
since 2008, when two pair or six 2-4 month old
unsexed could be shipped for $35. On-time
delivery was good, with 15% generally arriving
a day late. Four years ago USPS began pricing
by dimension as well as weight, and today that
same box will cost $120 shipping. Unfortunately,
dependability last fall and through the spring
resulted in 50%- 75% late deliveries.

At that time PayPal determined that 3-5 Day
Priority was not appropriate for shipping fish,
and anyone ordering fish using that method
could contact PayPal, and receive a refund
by saying that their fish did not arrive in good
shape. Many did this, often demanding that
costs for hard goods also be refunded, and
I stopped shipping 3-5 Day Priority about
     five years ago.

Fish can be purchased here by appointment.
     Simply email selectaquatics@gmail.com.

Following a recent YouTube video discussing
shipping, a company contacted me to partner
on their FedEx shipping, and I am now able to
ship boxes overnight for a flat rate of $70 to
most locations in the US. (Plus the cost of
the fish). Refunds, however, are not available
     for late delivery

With USPS, fish boxes are dropped off at an
air-conditioned local post office, where they
stay until driven to the airport after the heat of
the day. The box is then delivered "Hold for
Pickup", where they do not spend the day in
outdoor heat going to delivery. With FedEx,
boxes are picked up at Select Aquatics at
noon, and held in an enclosed, overheated
FedEx truck until delivered to the distribution
point at the end of the day. The box is then
driven in overheated trucks going out to
delivery. Test boxes shipped have resulted in
     substantial losses. Conversations with
FedEx about this have not yet arrived at
     a solution.

I always check source and destination
temperatures before any fish are shipped,
and many colder water fish, such as the
     Goodeids, are easily sterilized when
exposed to temperatures above 80 for
     any extended period. Currently,
temperatures are predicted for over 90
for upcoming weeks, and to ship at the
lower FedEx rate will require temperatures
of 80 or below here and at the destination
     to ship fish without losses.

As temperatures cool below 80 degrees,
this should not be a problem.
I make every
effort that customers do not need to have an
order re-shipped out to them, requiring an
additional shipping cost from the customer.
And of course, the fish shipped must arrive
healthy and able to reproduce normally.

Availability videos are ready when shipping
can be done safely this fall, to resume without
losses when temperatures are appropriate. I
will post Availability Videos as soon as fish
can be shipped, and continue to answer emails
every day regarding the proper care of these
     specialty fish.

The species shipped by Select Aquatics are
not bred and shipped solely for the enjoyment
of customers. Most of the species here are
disappearing from the hobby. Many were
predicted to disappear from the hobby within
10 years without propagation by hobbyists,
when selectaquatics was started in 2008.
These species here require special care,
and will not thrive or reproduce if shipped
in high temperatures, or when stressed
needlessly. Before purchase, the care of
each species needs to be carefully
researched, and your aquarium set up
must be adapted for their arrival.

If a species is not available from other
sources, though shipped from here, this
tells you that special care may be required,
and they may not survive without special
     accommodations . The Xiphophorus
     Montezuma,  the longest sworded
swordtail in the world, the Giant Sailfin
     Poecilia velifera and the Goodeids
     are examples. Customer feedback
information on their care can be found linked
from this homepage. Every effort is made
from this end that your fish arrive to you in
excellent shape, and will continue to thrive
so their population can be built out, and they
do not disappear from the hobby. Re-obtaining
them from the wild is no longer an option for
most species. Because a fish is a swordtail
does not mean that it can be kept in the
same manner as the Xiphophorus helleri
lines sold in your local pet store.

I cannot say how long I will offer these
species, but as I approach 70, the numbers
in the hobby need to be maintained by hobbyists.
Over a thousand Xiph. montezumae have been
shipped, for example, yet I am being informed
they are again becoming difficult to find from
     anywhere else.

Please click HERE for the current list of
species at selectaquatics, that will be made
available over upcoming months, following the
posting of their Availability Video. With an
     email to selectaquatics@gmail.com when
an Availability Video was posted, sales will be
first come first serve, and the availability will
be kept up-to-date on this page listed above.

Select Aquatics will be starting a new resource
to find many of the species that were once
carried by selectaquatics, or that fit the
Select Aquatics mission to provide access
to species that are currently disappearing
    from the hobby.

A section of the homepage will be created
with contacts of others breeding and shipping
fish that are no longer carried by Select Aquatics.
To list your email or website on this homepage
as having species available, please click Here to

species from disappearing. (See List to Left).

Mr. Sage provided me with the best experience I could've asked for. The wonderful fish he breeds are priced
very affordably, and are super high quality.

He always responded to our emails swiftly and was extremely helpful with any questions and concerns we had.
His packaging of the fish was phenomenal, and all (even the extras!) arrived across the country in excellent
              condition!

They are beautiful, healthy, and active. it was incredibly stress-free as I knew I could trust the process.
Despite a small delay due to the USPS, Greg quickly assured us that the fish would be fine.

Mr. Sage has a great reputation in the livebearer hobby, and I can say he has totally lived up to that
reputation for me and I'm looking forward to ordering from him again! I seriously can't recommend him
enough. Thank you for all you do for the hobby, Mr. Sage!

             Christina K. NY

First, off thank you for the beautiful fish. Every time I receive a new species from you I am always surprised by
how much more beautiful they are in real life versus the picture. The Alfaro cultratus you sent for example are far more
stunning than any picture I have ever seen of them. That includes Google image searches.

              Jay G., The Woodlands, TX

                Hi Greg,
The Odessa barbs are here, in GREAT shape, and currently 'acclimatizing' in a 5 gallon bucket with my own
              graduated drip system.

Thank you very, VERY much for your attention and care and patience with me throughout this process. I've been
receiving fish via express mail for 30 years but your packing is a whole new universe from what I've ever experienced.

Thank you again for the 'bonus' fish which I counted as 8 but my wife insists is 9. She also could not believe the packing
or condition of the fish. Also, thank you for the anticipated forwarding of the rebate check for the excess shipping charge.
When everything stabilizes, I'll forward some pics. Again this has been the best fish purchasing experience I've ever had.
