These fish have been developed from a few pair of normal X. mayae about 5 years
ago, when a young female was eventually born with an exaggerated dorsal fin.
I began selectively breeding them, and today they are in their 5th generation (not
counting that first female). I contacted all those who had kept this line before I
received it, and no one had even kept high fin fish in their fishrooms, going back
more than 2 years, allowing me to conclude that this fish was a genuine high fin
   mutation.

Maintain these as with any other sword. Because of their size and the fact that
they tend to be a shy fish, these do best in a well planted tank of at least 30 gallons.
Provide some water movement and consistent water changes, getting them to their
largest by providing occasional earthworms or blackworms.

The first generation of 4 batches of young were very small, with inconsistent
finnage- some had long banner like dorsal fins, and many were born with extended
gonopodiums, thus infertile. The line is now beginning to breed more consistently
as fairly large, hardy, robust fish. There have not been any lyre-tails. This is a very
new line, perfect for someone looking to begin a selective breeding program. Their
size is improving with each generation, they still have a way to go to express the
size and robustness of the largest non- high fin X. mayae. This is the first time this
fish has ever been sold. More care information Here.
